Microsoft Office Compatibility

Q.  Someone sent me a document created with Word 2010.   I use Word 2003. When I try to open this file, I get an error message that says, “Windows cannot open this file”.  What can I do?

A.  Last year Microsoft introduced Office 2010, which uses something called “Open XML” for the format of the files created in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  This format was started with Office 2007 several years ago.

To open those newer files with an older version of Office, you can download a “compatibility pack” that will allow you to open the newer file formats.  It is used with Microsoft Office 2003, Office XP, or Office 2000 programs. When you install the compatibility pack, you can open, edit, save, and create files in the Office Open XML Formats.

Before you download the “compatibility pack”, please read the information at this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924074.  There are requirements before downloading, and it also explains what happens with the file types (.doc versus .docx) after the download.
